One year before men set foot on the moon for the first time, Kubrick shows imaginary images of the Moon and Jupiter, but also of enigmatic monoliths. These black stone cuboids mark temporal and spatial shifts in the film too, going from the first use of tools in human history, to the conquest of space and finally to the opening of the gate to transcendence, to the origin of the universe and life.
